Reason Quantitatively, Design Solutions
We applied mathematical concepts from algebra and geometry, as well as biology concepts, to our investigation of the question, “How can humans travel to Mars?”
Students created paper rockets, launched them and recorded flight data, and then used this data to modify their 3D printed rockets (designed using Onshape CAD software). They also constructed a variety of hydroponic garden designs to demonstrate how plants grow and how they can provide us with cleaner air and the nutrients we need to sustain life on a rocket to Mars. The gardens incorporate a “closed system” design featuring a battery cell that uses bacteria and fluids to produce electricity.
